some diy cake toppers and some diy cake

first and foremost, how good is cake? i know, right?

i am 23. the grand milestone happened a couple of weeks ago and nick baked me a cake. this was not your ordinary yellow cake, this walnut and chocolate extravaganza was absolutely delicious and totally looked the part (we're talking double layers here).

ten husband points to nick.

this inspired me to get my bake on. i took it that one step further and made some cake toppers too. they are so easy to make! i have some stamps, so that helps, but the idea is simple and it just makes a cupcake or cake that little bit better (but yes, it is hard to beat a chocolate cupcake, cake topper or not).

i own a single cup cake stand. it is rather ridiculous how excited i am about this fact.
thank you cathie!

i've decided it's difficult to not look like a farm animal while eating a cupcake. it's the whole cupcake to mouth ratio, it's way off.

case in point

little dates big dates

berkelouw is a book store/cafe that lives in a converted warehouse in newtown. apart from the interior and hot chocolate being just delightful the definite highlight of this trip was my free preview reading of tina fey's bossypants. hands down the funniest thing i've ever read (i guess in general, it's harder to be funnier in books that on screen). now no offense but it has to be said, in general, female comedians are just not that funny. i find they tend to be crass and embarrassing (think judith lucy) but this book is just astoundingly funny and witty. i shall promptly buy it online. sorry berkelouw books but almost forty dollars for a paper back? you've got to be kidding.

i almost fell off my chair at the 'advanced praise' on the back of the book

I hope that's not really the cover, that's really going to hurt sales.” Don Fey, Tina's father.
“Absolutely delicious.” —A guy who eats books
 “Totally worth it.” —Trees

after we'd perused the books we ate mexican for dinner. the entirety of our dinner conversation consisted of nick telling me how many times he is going to have chipotle when we got back to the states this year "between two to four times, ideally three". i particularly enjoyed this place due to the great people watching position we snagged next to the window. secondly i pocketed some handy wipes for the road. don't you just love those things. score!

on sunday we went to bondi. it was lovely and perfect rolled into one.

without meaning to we have started a little habit of rating babies when we are out and about. no baby ever gets a bad rating, we generally only comment on the good (aka super cute) ones. apparently to nick, my baby taste is not refined, but whatevs, the babies i see just have a lot to live up to, because well, i know brody

somehow this conversation merged into nick telling me the names he would like to call our future chillens "humphrieta, rhubarb, baloo, nicholas one through however many kids we have and emma" it's scary there's a real name in there, because how do i know if he's serious about the other ones or not? i am dying to give the middle name danger "me, scared? my middle name is danger" to any child i have, so watch out world, rhubard danger hutchins may be on it's way. poor child, kids in the playground can be so cruel.

anyway moving on. sunday was also perfectly lovely because i got to swim in the ocean and that is now my all time favourite thing to do. i decided that about 18 months ago.

it was glorious!

i of course thought ahead to bring my swim suit but young nicholas did not, even though i pleaded and insisted "you're a guy, no one will know if you're in your undies" mr. robert's rules of order stayed put on the sand. so i swum and annoyed the seagulls (who annoy me, so now we're even) all by myself. we shared our second hi five of the day at the thought of moving to maroochydore.

all in all a perfectly lovely weekend

for the rain, for the train and for the pain

lately i've been trying to give gifts that show i actually put thought into the gift, with items that are specific to the giftee's life and i've actually been trying to put thoughts into gifts lately.

a friend recently had a birthday and she is currently at uni. i remember my uni days and studying til the wee hours of the morning and just feeling completely 'over it' so i wanted to get her some comfort things things to help her cope, especially as we head into winter and what better than magazines, chocolate and wine!

this is basically hot chocolate on a spoon, delicious! you add the 'chocolate spoon' to hot milk and it melts into a hot chocolate, ingenious!

for those playing at home, you may realise this wine is half empty, and no i didn't not give someone a half empty bottle of wine (i'm not that dodgy!) i just hadn't purchased the wine yet when i was taking these pictures.

a weekend of brunch

we lucked out this weekend, with not one but two chances to attend brunch with friends.

the first of which was prepared by a lovely friend of ours who went all out and made so many delicious things i just didn't know where to start. we're talking raspberry french toast (which is my new favourite thing to eat), pancetta baked eggs and bacon & beans.

the second of which was to celebrate another friend's twenty first year on this earth and it was just a a perfect sunday morning affair all round.

as someone who loves food and any opportunity to eat food, this was basically my idea of a perfect weekend. i mean brunch, brinner, whatever it is, if it's delicious, bring it on

i am thankfully still at that stage of life where my metabolism allows me to indulge this love of food. i am sure this will slowly fade away in the next ten years, so the way i see it, i should eat while i still can!

let them eat cake

nick's birthday was this past weekend.

happy birthday bear. you're such a spunk.

he turned twenty three. i feel old though i can understand we are not
to celebrate his birthday i made him a three layer ice cream cake, with each layer containing candy
(note candy - he's american)

one layer contained snickers
one layer contained twix
one layer contained kit kat

all layers were yum!

it was then drizzled with dark chocolate and decorated with
fun handmade birthday bits and pieces
